ADELANTO • Adelanto Elementary School District officials recently hired an administrative secretary to support the Board of Trustees, with a salary and benefits package totaling $122, 406.

The move upset parents and teachers within the district, and even a Hesperia councilman who called it “pathetic government.”

Superintendent Lily DeBlieux said in an email that the recommendation for the position was made by the Board of Trustees and acted upon solely by the board. It was approved by a 4-1 vote.

Several parents spoke out during the public comments portion of the Jan. 21 school board meeting regarding the agendized item. Board President Elaine Gonzales said she could not respond to the criticisms, stating, “it’s a matter of legalities and I’m not at liberty to speak on it.”

However, Gonzales later said the district’s administrative staff “is all working double time … so any help we can get them is always good.”
