REDLANDS >> A victim of Laura Whitehurst, a former Redlands Unified School District teacher convicted of having sex with underage students, has filed a civil complaint against Whitehurst, district officials and Citrus Valley High School for negligence and damages caused by a year-long sexual relationship that resulted in the birth of a child.

The complaint, filed Tuesday in Riverside County Superior Court by Irvine-based law firm Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, alleges that the district and high school failed to inform the victim’s family and law enforcement of the abuse and ignored or concealed Whitehurst’s past sexual abuse of students.

The complaint also names Sarah Seevers, a teacher and soccer coach in the district, and other unidentified district officials, claiming they failed to report the abuse to authorities.

During the time of the abuse, Whitehurst was under the responsibility of the district and high school, who failed to properly hire, train, supervise and prevent Whitehurst’s actions, according to the complaint.

“Definitely the goal here, 100 percent, is to stop it from happening in the future,” said Heather Cullen, an attorney representing the victim and his family. “It didn’t just happen to my client. This teacher victimized two other children that we know of for sure.”

Whitehurst pleaded guilty on July 31 to six felony counts associated with three victims — four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and two counts of oral copulation of a person under the age of 18 — in San Bernardino Superior Court.

She was sentenced on Aug. 28 to 365 days in jail and five years’ probation, per the terms in her plea agreement.

Whitehurst was released from jail on Jan. 5 and has registered as a sex offender.
