SAN BERNARDINO >> Former San Bernardino County Supervisor Jon Mikels, who represented the county’s second supervisorial district for 16 years, has died, according to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon and Mikels’ former wife of 30 years.

A friend found Mikels dead in his shower, the water still running, at his home just outside of Bandon, Ore. about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, said Sgt. Pat Downing of the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.

Mikels, 66, had been battling prostate cancer for the last three years. The cancer had spread to his lungs last year, said Marjorie Mikels, his former wife of 30 years.

She said her ex-husband returned to San Bernardino County for Christmas and seemed happy.

“He was in really good spirits,” Marjorie Mikels said.

A cause of death was not disclosed, and an autopsy will not be conducted because Mikels was under the care of a private physician at the time of his death, according to the Coos County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A friend with whom Mikels had regular contact reported the death after finding Mikels in his home, in the 50000 block of Rosa Road, in an unincorporated area near Bandon, Downing said.
