HESPERIA • There will be handshakes, hugs and cupcakes on Tuesday night as the Hesperia City Council appoints a new mayor to take the High Desert’s “Gateway City” into the New Year.

The council is scheduled to seat replacements for Mayor Bill Holland and Mayor Pro Tem Thurston “Smitty” Smith, who were both appointed to their present positions last year.

There has been a tendency that the mayor pro tem replaces the mayor and a member of the council takes over for the mayor pro tem. However, Holland says this procedure is not set in stone.

“It happens that way an awful lot but there is no guarantee,” Holland said.

Councilmen Holland, Smith, Mike Leonard and Russ Blewett have all served on the top two positions, while Eric Schmidt has yet to serve in either capacity.

“Whatever happens Tuesday night, it was an honor to serve as mayor alongside a solid group of men on the council,” Holland said. “The position taught me humility, and it was great to be a part of this team. Politics is a team sport.”

In 2010, the council adopted an annual reorganization procedure for both offices, which also includes a one-year term limit.
