SAN BERNARDINO >> Newly sworn in City Attorney Gary Saenz pledged to “open lines of communication” between his office and other elected city officials and department heads Wednesday evening.

He said he will be meeting with every city department head to convey his “open-door” policy and the importance he places on “open lines of communication” and his determination to de-politicize the City Attorney’s Office.

City Clerk Gigi Hanna swore Saenz in during a short ceremony in her office on the second floor of City Hall.

Voters on Nov. 5 decided by nearly 61 percent in favor to recall Jim Penman, who had been city attorney for 26 years.

Saenz garnered 56 percent of the votes to be his successor, while Tim Prince, his only competitor, got 44 percent.

“Now the real work starts,” Saenz said immediately after taking the oath of office from Hanna.

Saenz said he would be meeting today with the city attorney’s staff about ongoing cases and office procedures.
