Riverside County prosecutors filed stalking and identity theft charges against San Bernardino City Councilman Robert Jenkins.
Jenkins is the Ward 2 Councilman for San Bernardino. He was also a special education teacher with the Riverside County Office of Education.
Jenkins taught at Norte Vista High School in Riverside since March 2004. He has been on unpaid leave from the district since August because his teaching credential has expired.
Jenkins submitted a $25,000 bond with the court Thursday morning and is set to be arraigned Dec. 17 in Riverside Superior Court.
Jenkins, 33, was charged Thursday with 30 counts, including 18 felonies, after posting personal ads with photos and personal information of two people, claiming they were seeking sex on Craigslist.
Prosecutors said Jenkins was targeting an ex-lover and another man.
“This resulted in the victims being barraged with sexually graphic messages, and numerous individuals appearing at their residence seeking group sex,” according to a district attorney’s affidavit in support of an arrest warrant.
Anyone who responded to the ads was directed to the two victims in the case. The ads listed photographs, names and addresses. Prosecutors said Jenkins knew one of the victims and the second person was someone who the first victim had a prior relationship with.
Jenkins is also charged with using a false San Bernardino police and city seals on an internal memo using the names of a police lieutenant and a sergeant. Prosecutors believe Jenkins issued the memo to make it appear he was victim of harassment on the Internet.
Jenkins has been the Ward 2 San Bernardino Councilman since Aug. 2011. He won a special election to replace Jason Desjardin who resigned due to an investigation into a possible conflict of interest involving his towing company’s franchise with the city.
A special education teacher for the Riverside County Office of Education and past president of the Perris Hill Neighborhood Association, Jenkins was backed heavily by public safety unions in his campaign.
