SAN BERNARDINO >> Mayoral candidate Concepcion Powell is being taken off the ballot because she didn’t pay her filing fee nor the amount she owed for her candidate’s ballot statement, according to City Clerk Gigi Hanna.
Hanna asked county Registrar of Voters Michael Scarpello for the removal on Thursday evening, after Powell had missed several deadlines to pay a total of $4,092, and Scarpello said Friday that it would be done.
Powell said she will decide over the weekend how to fight the decision.
“San Bernardino citizens are used to this type of treatment from our local government,” Powell said. “This is why we have no fear and understand that it is the behavior of the old political machine impeding the participation in politics of concerned citizens, not career politicians.”
Powell, who according to her ballot statement is an economic development consultant, gave the required checks on Aug. 14, the deadline to file for mayor, but closed the account after she was robbed of about $7,000 and a laptop containing a password to the bank account, she and Hanna said.
The money and other items were stolen from her car at a San Bernardino gas station in mid August, Powell said.
