COLTON — Dr. Richard Pitts, who has been a physician, health educator and hospital administrator for 40 years, has been named medical director for Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

He replaces Dr. Dev GnanaDev, who held that job from 2000 to 2012.

Pitts joins the county hospital at a critical time, as he will help guide it through the start-up of the Affordable Care Act. The Individual Mandate portion of the law, which provides health coverage for millions of uninsured Americans, will take effect Jan. 1.

Emily has served as medical director since January.

As medical director, Pitts will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including: oversight of the delivery of medical services; development and implementation of policies and procedures in accordance with applicable laws related to the medical services; monitoring of daily patient care activities and providing a clinical perspective on all matters related to medical services.
