As nine candidates vie to replace her in the Legislature, state Sen. Norma Torres, D-Montclair, has thrown her support behind Pomona Councilman Freddie Rodriguez, also a Democrat, to succeed her in the 52nd Assembly District.

“Like me, Freddie has deep roots in our community, is a public safety professional, and has an outstanding track record of building coalitions to deliver results for the people he serves as a City Council member,” Torres’ endorsement reads in part on Rodriguez’s campaign website.

Torres won a special election earlier this year to fill a vacancy in the 32nd Senate District, which runs from the Pomona area to the San Bernardino area. Torres, a former Pomona mayor, was in the midst of her third term in the Assembly when she won a seat in the upper house.
