The state Supreme Court is set to issue a decision today on whether the city of Riverside is legally allowed to ban medical marijuana dispensaries through zoning laws.

The decision will be posted online at 10 a.m. and could set a precedent for numerous other cases in California questioning the use of zoning to ban dispensaries.

Attorneys representing the Inland Empire Patients Wellness Center in Riverside and the city of Riverside made their oral arguments in front of the Supreme Court on Feb. 5

“It’s a good thing we have cannabis to calm us down over the next couple of days,” said Lanny Swerdlow, who founded the Inland Empire Patients Wellness Center to provide patients access to medical marijuana.

Riverside officials have attempted to close the center because dispensaries are prohibited under the city’s zoning ordinance.
