Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod is one of the new members of the 113th Congress. She joined the House of Representatives this year after successfully challenging then-Rep. Joe Baca, D-San Bernardino, in the November election.

McLeod, D-Montclair, served in the state Senate and Assembly before winning her congressional seat. She also served on the Chaffey Community College board.

In January, McLeod was named to fellow Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson’s Gun Violence Prevention Task Force while Congress and much of the rest of the country was focused on the debate over gun control following December’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. At the time, a key part of the discussion was whether Congress would move forward with a sweeping assault weapons ban proposed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

Feinstein’s proposal has since been dropped from Senate Democrats’ main proposal, which now focuses on expanded background checks. The Senate voted last week to allow debate on the bill.

McLeod has also introduced the Veteran Excellence through Education Act, which would create a grant program for schools offering services to military veterans. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Veterans Affairs.

McLeod represents the 35th Congressional District, which includes Pomona, Chino, Montclair, Ontario, Fontana and Bloomington.
