SAN BERNARDINO – The community development director has announced her resignation, ending a tenure credited with bringing efficiency and more than $1 billion in building valuation to the city and leaving another high-level vacancy.
Margo Wheeler will become director of Planning Services for Palm Springs, a city whose population of 45,000 is less than one-fourth of San Bernardino’s, continuing a trend of department heads leaving the city as it works through bankruptcy court.
Wheeler said the city an hour east of San Bernardino attracted her because of its reputation as a tourist attraction and high level of educated citizen involvement.
“The bankruptcy was not really the issue,” she said, declining to say what had motivated her departure but adding she was excited to work in Palm Springs.
In 27 months in San Bernardino, Wheeler transformed the department, according to Mayor Pat Morris.
“She was in my view, the most talented planning director I’ve ever encountered,” Morris said. “I think in her case she’s irreplaceable. ”
