RIALTO – The City Council moved forward Tuesday with plans to fill the vacant seat on the dais through an appointment process.

In a 4-0 council vote, officials decided to have interested applicants submit letters to the City Clerk’s office by Friday at 5 p.m.

Interviews will take place before the Jan. 22 council meeting, when the new member of the council will be appointed.

Councilman Shawn O’Connell said his discussions with voters revealed that folks here want the council to move quickly to fill the vacancy.

“I believe we should move forward with an appointment,” O’Connell said.

Officials cited the need to address the city’s budget issues with a full council, in opting not to wait for a costly June election.

While the meeting agenda said a special election could cost up to $200,000, officials said a memo they received placed the cost at up to $285,000.
