Rod Hoops was a 26-year-old sheriff’s deputy who had been on the job just four years when he received a call about an assault with a deadly weapon in Chino Hills one quiet morning in 1983.
That day turned into the most memorable day of Hoops’ 34-year career in law enforcement.
“I can remember the deputy standing at the door very pale-looking,” Hoops said. “I asked, ‘What do we got?’ He said, ‘It’s horrible.’”
Hoops was one of the first three deputies to witness the aftermath of the Kevin Cooper massacre, one of the most notorious murders in San Bernardino County history.
“I can still smell the crime scene because there was so much blood,” he said. “It’s a scene that is ingrained in my mind.”

So Sheriff Hoopster was traumatized by the profession since the beginning of his career, no wonder he just goes along with a corrupt DA and CEO as far as selective application and enforcement of the laws of the land.
And how convenient, retiring-Sheriff Hoopster gets to run-off to DC and join his buddy retired-Redlands PD Chief Jim Bueermann at the Police Foundation, a non-profit for washed-up law enforcement, that Bueermann heads-up as President-o-the Police Foundation, what a gig, if you can meet the “qualifications”.
Of course, one of the Foundation’s partners, and a chief qualifier for being considered for acceptance into this Good Olde Boyz Club for Law Enforcement, is that your former agency needs to be contracting for “professional services” with this other nationwide outfit… Nancy Bohl-Penrod’s The Counseling Team International!
Well I am shocked that Rod can remember such details from that long ago.
An event ingrained into his brain/memory? OKAY!!!
It was a little over a year ago that another such event that would ingrain the events into ones brain. The death of Detective Duane Parkison.
Sheriff’s Hoops can remember ALMOST nothing of the events on that tragic day.
He can’t remember many of the people there. He cannot remember specific conversation with anyone, vague comments at best, he can’t even remember what restuarant he went to with the SUSPECT and her husband who was involved in the death of his detective.
Hoops can’t even remember if he paid cash for the lunch, or used his credit card.
Hoops THINKS he might have talked about Nebraska football with the suspect and her husband, ONLY becuase Chief Pete Ortiz told him he did.
LEAVING on his own with NO pressure. OKAY Rod if you say so.
Hey LSW thanks for the above posting. I’ll save my postage and not send anything to Rods new boss, it will be a waste of time and money.
Hoops is now in the middle of a FRIGHTENINGLY high tight rope.
Hoops looks for help in front of him, but PENROD is no where to be found,
in desperation he looks behind him, but TIDWELL has long ago bailed on him too…
AND HE BURNED TOO MANY BRIDGES WITH TOO MANY PEERS!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
“Redlands PD Chief Jim Bueermann at the Police Foundation”
WELL WELL WELL…I WAS NOT CRAZY AFTER ALL…
Why is Hoops trying to write a fictional book about how great he is? I love the Captain looking at Hoops (in the picture)and falling on everyword. Hoops is running, that’s why they keep playing these sob stories and stating “He is leaving on his own accord?” Can a misdemeanor warrant follow him to DC? What about a felony warrant? Why do the papers out here think no one trust anything they write. It’s a bunch of crap Melissa (staff writer.) How about digging up the Duane Parkison story where Hoops took the suspect who killed an SBSD deputy to lunch. How about the money the deputies raised for Mrs. Parkison and how it never made it to her. How about investigating the SBSD IRNET drug scandel and where did the money and drugs go Chief Cook (Hoops Best Friend?) How about those POSTgate people who are still running around with a bogus POST pay. What about the Explorers that got sexually assaulted while Hoops was sheriff from his staff? You never put the work into these stories and so many more while Hoops played sheriff. You instead paint him as a coffee drinking great guy. HA HA Good bye Hoops and I hope the civil courts will get some of that retirement for your mismanagement. Hell you have promoted 2 blacks above the rank of captain and what about Mexicans and females. You say you are going to help get them promoted. Smells like someone was going to do something about fixing promotions but had to take care of the good old boy club. To bad, you could have hired a few blacks, females and Mexicans, but you didn’t. Glad to see you go and take McMahon and Fonzi with you.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
