New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Independence USA Super PAC has spent an astounding $2.35 million on a television ad buy on behalf of state Sen. Gloria Negrete-McLeod, who is running against Rep. Joe Baca in a new Inland Valley congressional district.

That amount comes on top of the $196,423 Independence USA had spent on earlier mail ad buys to support McLeod and $230,475 spent on anti-Baca mailings.

The two Democrats are facing off in the new 35th Congressional District that ranges from the Pomona area in the west to Bloomington and Fontana areas in the east. The 35th also includes a portion of the Chino Valley.

Bloomberg is a gun control advocate and the negative ads attack Baca’s pro-Second Amendment stances.

“It is appalling that an East Coast outsider like Mayor Bloomberg is trying to dictate the outcome of a congressional race thousands of miles away,” Baca said.

Baca said he will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. today at his Ontario office to address the ads.

“This Super PAC is spending millions trying to buy an election for a candidate who stands for nothing and has accomplished even less,” he said. Bloomberg’s PAC, Independence USA, reported the buy to the federal elections commission Wednesday. The $2.35 million spent to boost McLeod’s campaign is Independence USA’s largest single expenditure thus far, but not its only seven-figure play.
