SAN BERNARDINO – The school board approved a contract Wednesday night for the superintendent who is scheduled to take office July 1, but incoming Superintendent Dale Marsden has not yet signed it.

Until he does, the details of that contract are private, board members said, but they indicated his pay would be more than the previous superintendent and in line with other districts close in size to San Bernardino City Unified School District.

Former superintendent Arturo Delgado made $209,600 a year until he left in June 2011 to lead Los Angeles County schools.

“If you want the best, you have to pay the best,” said board President Barbara Flores. “We have a very large district, and we have every confidence in Dr. Marsden.”

Other board members agreed, voting 6-1 to offer the contract to Marsden, who has been superintendent of the Victor Elementary School District.

But Danny Tillman said he couldn’t support a contract that increased pay while other employees face cutbacks.

“For me, it was easy,” Tillman said. “I’m just one board member, but I can’t support more pay and benefits when everyone else is having to cut back. We have to send the message that we support our employees.’
