The San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee won’t be endorsing the re-election bid of the lone Democrat on the Board of Supervisors, Chairwoman Josie Gonzales, citing her support for Republican candidates over the years, including former county Assessor Bill Postmus.
Committee member Gil Navarro proposed a “do not support” resolution for Gonzales in March, but the proposal failed on a 14-13 vote on Thursday evening, said Ron Wall, committee chairman.
The committee did, however, decide it wouldn’t endorse either Gonzales, a former Fontana councilwoman, or her opponent, community organizer Silvia Marroquin, also of Fontana and also a Democrat, for the 5th District supervisorial seat because neither met the minimum
threshold the committee has set for an endorsement, Wall said.
Elective county offices are nonpartisan.
Wall said committee resolutions require only a majority vote, and endorsements for an incumbent require a minimum 50percent of the vote and 60 percent for a challenger.
Gonzales, who has been endorsed by the committee previously, said Friday it has the right to support or not support whomever it wants.
“I will not subscribe to a political party. I belong to the party of the people,” Gonzales said. “I refuse to be put into a box and told what to do and how to do it. I don’t follow political parties and I do what I believe is best in every situation.”
The proposed resolution cited several examples of Gonzales’ endorsement of Republicans over the years, including Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren, Fontana Councilman Michael Tahan and Postmus, also a former Board of Supervisors chairman.
A campaign mailer submitted to the committee showed Gonzales standing aside a smiling Postmus during his campaign for assessor in 2006. The catch phrase reads “Supervisor Bill Postmus endorsed by respected Democrats” and includes a quote from Gonzales: “I work side-by-side with Bill Postmus…. He cares about helping the average working family.”
Postmus was implicated in corruption scandals involving the Assessor’s Office and the county’s $102 million legal settlement with Rancho Cucamonga investor consortium Colonies Partners LP in November 2006.
He has pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges including conspiracy and misappropriation of public funds in exchange for testifying against other defendants in the case, including former Supervisor Paul Biane and developer Jeff Burum, a co-managing partner of Colonies Partners.

THEY FORGOT TO MENTION GONZALES ATTENDED THE SBC GOP’S DINNER AND CHRISTMAS PARTY AS POSTMUS’ SPECIAL GUEST!
Well, art least she has done something right; support the GOP and piss off the local Liberal party twits. You go girl!
Unwilling…..What are you talking about? She was supporting the Gay Meth head supervisor and leader of the GOP party for the inland empire. This is the same guy that you despise. She is the incompetent Joe Leiberman of San Bernardino county.
Dems need to purge her from the party.
The Democratic Committee can’t see the good candidate in Josie, only because they can’t control her. The democrats do not like integrity/ sound moral principles. I guess that is why I changed my party.
Do you mean the integrity and sound moral principles like those displayed by her friend Bill Postmus? What’s even more hysterical is that just about every elected GOP official knew he was a gay meth head and yet, they still towed the line right behind him, Derry and the Administrator of this site included.
JOSIE IS A JOKE. Yesterday, (one month away from the election) after forcing opposition residents to sit through hours of Cadiz Corporation’s sales pitch for privatizing and mining our precious East Mojave desert water aquifer (to be sold to coastal water companies) at the public’s expense and for Cadiz private profit…Mitzelfelt, Gonzales, Ovitt and Rutherford gave opponents each 3 minutes, then voted to move the project one step further by making it impossible for future Supervisors to contest the in-process EIR unless they sued, whereas before their “MOU,” they could just vote against it. Cadiz stands to make billions on water that now is a beneficial San Bernardino public resource in Mitzelfelt’s district…Mitzelfelt has taken at least $48,000 in campaign contributions from Cadiz and ties. Does anyone know how much Gonzales got? Thank you Gonzales for 3 minutes after driving 3 hours from the East Mojave. Josie Gonzales give away. Privatize water profits–socialize liability…that is her idea of being a Democrat. I am joining the local Democrats…the Central Committee is right on about her.
