UPLAND – The City Council on Monday approved a contract with a Chino-based law firm Gutierrez, Fierro & Erickson to provide interim legal services while the city seeks a permanent firm to serve as city attorney.

The city has gone out to bid for a new city attorney due to increasing legal costs. It is expecting to have a new contract in place by July 1, said City Manager Stephen Dunn.

Jimmy Gutierrez, city attorney for Chino and Rialto, replaced for Upland’s City Attorney William Curley during Monday’s meeting.

“He has agreed, and we are very thankful he is going to provide us interim city attorney work while we go through the process of selecting a new attorney,” Dunn said.

Los Angeles-based Richards, Watson & Gershon has been the city’s legal counsel since 1993.
