The PE: RIVERSIDE COUNTY: Supervisors pledge help for budget-battered cities

Four Riverside County cities that took a financial hit in last year’s state budget might get a helping hand from the county, supervisors said Tuesday. But California lawmakers need to solve the problem they created, supervisors added.

Menifee, Wildomar, Eastvale and Jurupa Valley all face fiscal challenges as a result of the state budget passed last summer. The four cities lost $15 million, part of $200 million in vehicle-license fee revenue that the state redirected to pay for local law-enforcement grants.

San Bernardino County Supervisor Neil Derry will not be allowed to identify himself as a businessman on the ballot for the June election, a Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday.

UPLAND – The City Council on Monday approved a board of directors for the San Antonio Water Co. just in the nick of time.

Council members narrowly approved a seven-member board, which will be voted on April 3 at San Antonio’s annual stockholders meeting.

The road was rocky, but the end was Magic.

A saga for control of the Dodgers more than a year in the making culminated with Tuesday’s announcement that a group led by Magic Johnson had been selected to purchase the team from outgoing owner Frank McCourt.

The group, Guggenheim Baseball Management LLC, will acquire the team for $2 billion upon completion of the closing process, according to a joint statement released late Tuesday. The group includes Johnson, former Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals president Stan Kasten, controlling partner Mark Walter, Mandalay Entertainment chief executive Peter Guber, Bobby Patton and Todd Boehly.

California’s unemployment rate will remain elevated for the next couple of years, according to a new UCLA forecast, and in some parts of the state won’t return to pre-recession levels until 2016.

Still, the state’s labor market is on the mend and is likely to heal faster than the nation as a whole, economists at the UCLA Anderson Forecast said Wednesday.

CCTimes: Romney rolls out California leadership team

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, completing a campaigning and fundraising swing through California today, announced his leadership team for the Golden State.

Former governors Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian will serve as honorary statewide chairman, while the statewide chairs will be 2010 GOP gubernatorial nominee and current HP CEO Meg Whitman; House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield; Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista; Rep. Mary Bono-Mack, R-Palm Springs; Rep Buck McKeon, R-Santa Clarita; congressional candidate and state Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark; and 2010 GOP U.S. Senate nominee Carly Fiorina of Los Altos Hills. McCarthy’s and Fiorina’s endorsements were announced yesterday.
