SAN BERNARDINO – City Manager Charles McNeely resigned Thursday, according to City Clerk Georgeann “Gigi” Hanna.

McNeely, who began working in June 2009, will continue until May 1. His contract was scheduled to expire in June.

“I wish to express my gratitude for the opportunity to have worked with you over the last three years,” reads the letter, dated Wednesday but distributed to city employees Thursday. “The residents of this community are fortunate to have such dedicated employees who sacrifice so much to maintain a high level of service to this community under the most difficult of circumstances.”

McNeely did not say why he was leaving and would not be available to speak Thursday, said Assistant to the City Manager James Graham.

In December, McNeely denied a rumor that he would leave the city in January because a new City Council might not agree with his direction. Those council members took their seats March 5.
