Riverside County Supervisor Bob Buster has filed a legal challenge to try to force election opponent and Assembly member Kevin Jeffries to revise his self-description on the June 5 ballot.

Buster is asking a judge to order the county registrar of voters not to use the term “small business owner” in Jeffries’ ballot statement. Jeffries, R-Lake Elsinore, and retired police Officer Mike Soubirous are trying to unseat Buster.

The legal action, filed Monday in Riverside County Superior Court, alleges the description violates election law, which requires candidates to describe “the current principal profession, vocations or occupations of the candidate.”

According to Buster, Jeffries’ full-time job is assemblyman, not businessman.

Jeffries said his family owns and manages office and retail space as well as single-family rental homes.
