Riverside County’s glaring inmate overpopulation will get state relief for construction, possibly for the Indio facility

The state will award Riverside County $100 million to expand the jail system and ease prisoner crowding, Sheriff Stan Sniff announced Thursday.

PDF: Petition filed by SBD Airport Services in federal bankruptcy court

SAN BERNARDINO – A feud between the San Bernardino International Airport Authority and a controversial provider of aircraft fuel intensified Thursday, after the provider – SBD Airport Services – announced it filed for bankruptcy protection, alleging the airport is intentionally crippling its services.

VICTORVILLE • Deputy Public Defender Mark Shoup announced Thursday he’s pulling out of the race for San Bernardino County 1st District Supervisor.

Shoup’s decision followed news from the county’s Safety Employees’ Benefit Association that nearly 74,000 signatures were filed Wednesday in support of qualifying a ballot measure that would reduce the county Board of Supervisors to part time. The proposed charter amendment, which requires 43,500 signatures to make the ballot, would reduce compensation for the county’s five elected supervisors from an average of $271,000 to $60,000 annually, and slash their budgets from a total of $6 million to $250,000 per office.

Once again, California faces a budget crisis. Revenues are projected to come in lower than anticipated. The governor and special interest groups are sparring over competing tax measures. Angry college students are occupying the Capitol.

And yet the most talked about issue in Sacramento these days is a Fish and Game Commissioner who legally killed a mountain lion in Idaho.
