SAN BERNARDINO – Georgeann “Gigi” Hanna won the San Bernardino city clerk post Tuesday night, beating her opponent by two votes.

Hanna received 50.01 percent of the votes, 6,066, while Amelia Sanchez-Lopez took in 49.99 percent, 6,064.

A total of 12,130 people voted, according to the county Registrar of Voters Office.

“It makes you a little nervous,” Hanna said about the two ballots that brought her victory. “But we’re very pleased to receive those extra two votes.”

Hanna said she felt great after the final results and that she was grateful for the people who came out to support her.

“That means that every single door that we knocked on the last couple of days can claim that they were the ones that put me over,” she said.

The first ballot count of the night showed the city clerk run-off opponents were tied.

In a highly unusual circumstance, Sanchez-Lopez and Hanna had both received 6,038 votes.

There were still some outstanding ballots at 8:15 p.m. and officials were waiting for mail pick-ups to return from the Post Office.

The final count was announced about 9:30 p.m.

Hanna is the newest San Bernardino city clerk in 21 years.
