Veteran Colton City Councilman Frank A. Gonzales has been named the city’s new mayor pro tem.

The council agreed to the appointment Tuesday night without opposition. In fact, the appointment was approved before Mayor Sarah S. Zamora asked Gonzales if he was willing to take the job.

“Yes, I accept,” he responded. “I’d like to thank all the council members for the vote of confidence. I won’t let you down.”

Gonzales, 74, is a retired steel production supervisor who started as a steelworker and served as president of his union local for 22 years before entering public service in the 1970s.

He served 20 years as a councilman and then mayor before being voted out of office in 1995.
