Assemblyman Tim Donnelly on Thursday said he was assaulted and threatened on Dec. 26 by a man in Rancho Cucamonga due to his opposition to the Dream Act.

Donnelly, R-Hesperia, said the incident happened at an event to collect enough signatures to qualify a referendum to overturn the act on this November’s state ballot.

The late December incident comes along with numerous threats that have been made to his office in Sacramento, he said.

He said he has always carried a weapon but these incidents have underscored his need for having one.

Donnelly was cited Wednesday morning after Transportation Security Administration officers found a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag at an L.A./Ontario International Airport checkpoint.

“I’m not going to go publicly into detail because that’s just not prudent,” Donnelly said Thursday. “What I will say is that our office in the Capitol received multiple death threats.”

The threats also have been sent by email, he said.
