SAN BERNARDINO – The City Council voted 4-3 late Monday night to endorse a proposed lease agreement with Regal Entertainment Group to revamp 14 of the 20 screens at the former CinemaStar movie theater near Fourth and E streets.

The agreement was to go before the San Bernardino Economic Development Corp. board later in the evening.

According to the proposal, Regal will take over 14 of the 20 screens, with the rest run by the city and turned into restaurants, a flexible meeting space and perhaps a storage site.

The agreement calls for a 10-year lease with the nation’s largest movie theater group, with options to renew, up to 34 years.

Rent for the first 10 years will total $8.5 million, according to a staff report.
