Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, was in Hesperia on Wednesday to help break ground on the city’s largest transportation project.

The $26 million Undercrossing Project – under the BNSF railroad tracks at the extension of Ranchero Road – aims to improve traffic flow and safety.

For instance, as it stands, Ranchero Road ends at either side of the railroad right-of-way, forcing commuters and emergency responders to travel seven miles out of the way to cross the city from east to west.

City officials say elected leaders such as Lewis, and Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, both D-Calif., were instrumental in tapping more than $12million in federal funding.

It was a busy day for Lewis, who in the morning was in Redlands.

About 65 people were in attendance at a meeting of the Sunrise Rotary at the Redlands Country Club, where he was the guest speaker.
