COLTON — Choking up as she recited the oath of office, Sarah S. Zamora was sworn in Tuesday as mayor.
The ceremony came one month and two days after the previous mayor — her husband, David Zamora — died of an apparent heart attack.
“This appointment to mayor is bittersweet for me,” Zamora said, recalling a 40-year partnership with her husband, from his first job with the city in 1981 to his election as mayor in 2010.
“I will strive to serve the remainder of my term with his vision guiding me.”
In a 5-1 vote on Aug. 2, the City Council chose Zamora to fill the remainder of the term that ends in November 2014.
Council members cited the cost of an election — a mail-in election was estimated to cost at least $80,000 — and a community consensus that Zamora was best for the job because of her close connection to the previous mayor and her time as a councilwoman from 2000 to 2004.
Rep. Joe Baca, D-San Bernardino, who delivered the oath of office, said he couldn’t think of another time he had sworn in a husband and a wife as mayor.
