State Sen. Bill Emmerson’s Riverside County district is a good ways from downtown Los Angeles.
A weekend newspaper story, though, links an Emmerson bill to an effort to undercut a proposed NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles.
According to the Los Angeles Times, a Texas developer named Billy Bob Barnett has a history of bad blood with developer Philip Anshutz, whose firm AEG is behind the downtown stadium effort. Now Barnett is pushing legislation that could hinder the project, according to the article.
Emmerson’s bill would require professional sports teams to post a bond to ensure repayment of any local-government borrowing. It took shape July 14, the day lawmakers left for their summer recess.
Monday, Emmerson said he had never heard of Barnett before Sunday’s story. His bill, he said, would cover any sports deal that receives public money, not just the AEG project. He cited efforts to build sports facilities in Sacramento, San Diego and the City of Industry.
