Wanted: Grand Terrace or southern Colton residents concerned about steep education program cuts, struggling schools and ways to continue increasing test scores in the Colton Joint Unified School District.

The district announced Friday that it was seeking candidates for the school board seat representing Grand Terrace and some parts of southern Colton, which Kent Taylor held until he resigned to become superintendent of Southern Kern Unified School District.

The board unanimously decided on June 28 to appoint someone to the seat rather than holding a special election, pointing to the increased cost and time required for an election and the fact that the seat will be up for election again in November 2012.

Residents of Area 3 – the borders of the seat can be seen in the superintendent’s office at 1212 Valencia Drive in Colton – have until July 19 to mail an application or deliver it to the superintendent’s office.

The board will then interview candidates at a special board meeting on Aug. 2 and appoint someone at its regular Aug. 4 meeting.
