CalPERS is about to raise health care premiums for its members an average of 4.1 percent, about half as much as last year.

The pension fund’s health benefits committee Tuesday recommended a 4.1 percent increase effective next Jan. 1. The proposal goes to the full CalPERS board today.

CalPERS’ annual health premium increase is considered a major harbinger of where health insurance rates are going across the country. About 1.3 million members are covered by the California Public Employees’ Retirement System.
