Rep. Joe Baca said Friday he might run in a proposed congressional district being eyed by state Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod.

Two can play that game, however. Monday, Negrete McLeod said she might run in Baca’s hometown district, which could lead to a possible rematch against Baca’s son.

Last week’s release of draft redistricting maps has revived a cold war between the Baca and Negrete McLeod factions that turned hot in 2006, when then-Assembly members Negrete McLeod and Joe Baca Jr. battled in the Democratic primary for a San Bernardino County-based state Senate seat.

Friday, Baca, D-Rialto, said Democratic leaders in Washington had encouraged him to run in the new West End district to ensure a Democratic victory. Baca suggested that Negrete McLeod could not win the seat.

Under that scenario, Baca said his son, Rialto Councilman Joe Baca Jr., would run in the Rialto-San Bernardino seat that Baca Sr. now represents.
