REDLANDS – The city’s next police chief will not come from the city’s own Police Department.

City Manager N. Enrique Martinez announced Tuesday that none of the four police lieutenants is interested in the position, which will now be open to candidates from outside the city.

“As we started this recruitment, there were four lieutenants that were the logical group from where to select a candidate,” Martinez said. “Three of the four have notified me in writing that they are not interested in pursuing the position of police chief. The fourth lieutenant is interested but only on an interim basis.”

Last week, the city held a public forum to allow residents to offer their input regarding what they want of the next chief. Most who spoke said they want the chief to come from within the department or carry on the practices and approach to policing of Jim Bueermann, who announced his retirement in December and will leave the post at the end of June.

Martinez said he is committed to finding a replacement who will continue the culture of the department and will enlist the assistance of a recruitment firm to solicit candidates.
