The President of the San Bernardino County Safety Employees Benefit Association (SEBA) is expected to have tendered his resignation within the past hour.

The Board of Directors convened at noon today to take up the matter on its agenda.

Unconfirmed sources indicate the reason for President William Abernathie’s resignation may revolve around an investigation targeting the Sheriff’s Department.

The aforementioned investigation was exploring allegations surrounding the falsification of training records to facilitate higher compensation.

An investigation that has reportedly implicated a significant number of current and former Sheriff supervisory and command personnel.

This was expected to be Abernathie’s last term of office, which was to expire in November.

Sources also indicate the expected press conference to announce those being charged in the investigation planned for next week may be advanced.

The unions Secretary of the Board, Lauren Leichliter, is expected to replace Abernathie until the fall elections.

Updated (04:30 p.m.): Abernathie is categorically denying any involvement in the records investigation. His resignation will be effective in 30 days.
