A special election will be held July 12 to fill the San Bernardino City Council seat vacated by the resignation of Councilman Jason Desjardins.

Desjardins, 37, resigned Feb. 11 from the 2nd Ward council seat he won two years ago. The 2nd Ward represents San Bernardino’s downtown area.

The City Council voted Tuesday night to approve a recommendation from City Clerk Rachel Clark to call the election in July. Under the city’s charter, the council had 180 days from the date of Desjardins’ resignation to hold an election. That meant the election had to be held by Aug. 10.

Desjardins announced that he was leaving the council to take care of his mother, who is recovering in Los Angeles County from complications of gall bladder surgery.
