California Attorney General-elect Kamala Harris has tapped San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael A. Ramos for her transition leadership team.
At a Dec. 15 news conference at the Hiram W. Johnson State Office Building in San Francisco, Harris named Ramos to co-chair her Committee on Gangs, Gun Crimes and Organized Crime, one of 11 “Smart on Crime” committees she has developed.
“Our office has done great work at the local level in the area of gang prosecution,” Ramos said in a statement Wednesday. “I look forward to helping move the state forward in the areas of gang suppression, prevention and intervention.”
Ramos, a Republican, has worked with Harris, a Democrat who has been San Francisco’s district attorney, on legislation regarding victim and witness assistance and relocation. He also has testified with her before a Senate hearing committee on the issue of cracking down on truancy as a key to prevention.
The aim of the Smart on Crime committees, Harris said in a statement, is to develop smart and innovative policies on how to fix California’s broken criminal justice system.
