Rep. Mary Bono Mack made history Thursday as the first Republican woman to be named chairperson of a House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee.

The Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee has influence over consumer affairs, interstate and foreign commerce, motor vehicle safety and regulation of tourism and travel.

In making the announcement Thursday, Bono Mack said she was honored to hold the gavel for the next session of Congress in which Republicans will take majority control of the House.

The Palm Springs Republican added that she looked forward to being “on the front lines of identifying wasteful programs, burdensome regulations and targeting areas to immediately cut federal spending.”

“I will work with Chairman (Fred) Upton and my colleagues towards an era of less government and more economic certainty — fostering growth for the American economy,” Bono Mack said in the statement.
