Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday appointed three judges for the Inland area, one for Riverside County and two for San Bernardino County.

All three are former prosecutors, all are Republicans, and the oldest is 46. They each will earn a yearly salary of $178,789.

Voting until nearly midnight eastern time, the House of Representatives on Thursday approved a tax plan that keeps income tax rates in place, extends unemployment benefits and offers a temporary cut in payroll taxes.

Approved by a 277-148 vote, the plan will put money in the pockets of most American workers and give new tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. The plan was approved by the Senate on Tuesday and will now go to President Barack Obama for his signature.

Rep. Mary Bono Mack made history Thursday as the first Republican woman to be named chairperson of a House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee.

The Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee has influence over consumer affairs, interstate and foreign commerce, motor vehicle safety and regulation of tourism and travel.

SACRAMENTO • After a gunbattle killed a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, Assemblyman Tim Donnelly called on President Obama Thursday to send the full power of the United States National Guard and military units to the “war zone on the southern border.”

Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, a member of the agency’s special Search, Trauma and Rescue team, was killed in a gun battle Tuesday night in Arizona, about 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexican border.
