Ruben Rasso, a retired Riverside County sheriff’s deputy, requested a recount today (Dec.1) for Measure M, county officials said.

County spokesman Ray Smith said the recount is tentatively scheduled to begin Dec. 8 at 9 a.m.

“It will obviously be a large job because of the number of ballots cast in that race,” Smith said.

Brian Floyd, a consultant to the Measure L campaign, said by e-mail that Rasso would issue a statement Thursday about the recount request.

Measure M allows county supervisors to decrease retirement benefits for public safety employees but requires a public vote to increase those benefits. It also would protect survivor benefits by requiring a public vote to decrease them.

The measure was a direct response to Measure L, which the Riverside Sheriff’s Association qualified for the ballot by gathering enough signatures. Measure L would prohibit the county from changing pension benefits for public-safety employees without a vote of the electorate.
