Though leaders discussed it for more than a year, San Bernardino County will not purchase Carousel Mall and use the property for a new county government center.

County spokesman David Wert said the county notified the mall owner several months ago that the county was not interested in buying the property.

Supervisor Neil Derry said the county doesn’t have the money for a new government center.

“The problem we have is that we don’t have the revenues we were told we had,” said Derry, who supports building a new government center on part of the mall property. “Right now, creating an expanded government center is not a likely scenario.”

That’s a big change from earlier this year.

In March, Derry said the county’s desire to move forward with a new government center on the Carousel Mall property was one of the reasons county Chief Administrative Officer Greg Devereaux was hired.
