The bi-annual ritual of vying for top spots on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors is underway.

Who will likely be in the mix for the positions of Chair and Vice-Chair seems easy to read at this point.

One issue, which appears to be coming to a head, is whether or not fifth district supervisor Josie Gonzales will ascend from vice-chair to chair.

The answer to this question? More than likely no.

In January 2009, Gonzales made something clear when she assumed the vice-chair title.

She told her colleagues she didn’t want the top spot.

Now Gonzales wants the job.

The only problem here is most, if not all, of her peers don’t she it her way.

There are several reasons, most of which are obvious.

One key issue however is Gonzales’ competency and another is her tendency to sweep problems under the rug.

How can Gonzales preside over the board when she can’t even run her own staff without canning someone on a near monthly basis?

Yesterdays board meeting was a prime example. When Gonzales praised outgoing county counsel Ruth Stringer, she said “You have brought the ultimate integrity to the County Counsel’s office.”

WTF? Gonzales clearly knows why Stringer is departing.

Why not just say “I wish you the best.” or “Enjoy yourself with that $272,000 pension.”

Anyways, Supervisor Gonzales can forget being chair. It’s not going to happen.

No one! I repeat ‘No one’ is going to endure five-hour board meetings, and other idiotic stunts from Gonzales.

Which leads us to the two likely contenders.

Mitzelfelt

The two being first district supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt and third district supervisor Neil Derry.

Derry seems to be the only supervisor willing to push forward with reforms which have included, a sunshine ordinance, reductions in benefits for elected officials, and other cost-cutting ideas.

Reforms, which Derry’s colleagues have grudgingly voted for, while sniping at him behind his back.

The keyword here? “Leadership”.

Derry doesn’t care and he isn’t afraid, particularly of District Attorney Mike Ramos, who seems to have the other four supes intimidated to the point they are scared to death.

If county supervisors go with the intermittent practice of seniority ascension, Gonzales would be chair and Mitzelfelt vice-chair.

Don’t expect it this time.

The elections to the top posts are two-year irrevocable terms.
