San Bernardino County Supervisor-elect Janice Rutherford has announced that her chief of staff will be 33-year-old Yucca Valley Mayor Chad Mayes. Mayes has served on the Yucca Valley Town Council since 2002.

The Yucca Valley council is made up of five elected members, with one selected each year to serve as mayor for the following year.

Mayes’ term as mayor expires in December. He was re-elected to the council Tuesday night.

The 25-year resident of Yucca Valley worked briefly as a field representative for former supervisor Dennis Hansberger, and is a small business owner in the field of accounting and tax preparation. Rutherford, who takes office on Dec. 6 after defeating 8-year incumbent Paul Biane in the Second District race, said she got to know Mayes over the last several years when they each served together on the board of directors for the League of California Cities. “He is incredibly smart, extremely ethical and just an all around good guy,” Rutherford said. “He’s very interested in seeing government work effectively and improving citizen involvement.”

Mayes said his first project is to help Rutherford round out a staff of top talent.

“We’ve got a short time frame to get it all together,” he said.

Mayes said Rutherford has given him clear instructions in putting together a staff on the taxpayers’ dime.

“This is the people’s money,” he said. “You need to make sure you live within your means.”
