ADELANTO • The three candidates vying for Adelanto’s mayoral seat have each offered a few suggestions for improving the city’s financial condition.

The mayoral candidates include: incumbent Mayor Charley Glasper, Cari Thomas and Ronald Beard.

“We are hoping to get the commercial development going to enhance our sales tax revenue to help increase our general fund revenue,” said Glasper, a retired Air Force chief master sergeant. “We will have to hold our discretionary spending within the constraints of our present budget.”

Glasper noted the city can benefit in the long-term commercially from partnerships with major developer Lewis Group of Companies, the Victor Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Victor Valley Economic Development Authority.

Thomas, a current councilwoman and occupation enrollment specialist, said the city’s lack of redevelopment money will make it tough to offer perks for new business. She’s hopeful that the long-awaited Target shopping center off Highway 395 will break ground in 2011, and in the meantime she wants to search for creative ways to replenish city coffers.
