SAN BERNARDINO – Boeing Co. is testing a larger version of its 747 jumbo jet out of San Bernardino International Airport.

The aircraft is expected to be based in San Bernardino for the next few weeks, SBIA aviation director Bill Ingraham said Thursday.

“The aircraft will fly out of here. It will be mostly in the air and fly out of here,” he said.

The Boeing 747-8 is about 18 feet longer than the widely used 747-4 aircraft. The new version has 467 seats, compared with its predecessor’s 400 seats.

The San Bernardino Million Air franchise at the airport and Norton Aircraft Maintenance Services have been hired to provide support services to Boeing’s test work, according to an announcement from SBIA.
