Former San Bernardino County Assessor Bill Postmus was taken into custody this morning when he appeared to arrive for his preliminary hearing under the influence of a controlled substance, officials said.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies at the court arrested Postmus at 10:45 a.m. He is expected to be booked at a local jail, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Beavers.

Postmus, 39, was scheduled to hear evidence against him in the case charging him with nine felony counts of grand theft, misuse of public funds, perjury and drug possession and one misdemeanor count of drug paraphernalia possession.

The charges stem from his stint leading the assessor’s office and his 2009 arrest, when drugs were reportedly found inside his apartment.
