FONTANA – The city has posted online the pay of its top positions in an effort to have a more open government and to avoid the type of fallout that occurred when leaders in Bell drew fat salaries out of the public coffers.

“I think their motivation is they want to be transparent,” City Manager Ken Hunt said Monday.

Councilwoman Janice Rutherford proposed the idea at last week’s City Council meeting after residents questioned the pay of officials here.

Rutherford, who is running for San Bernardino County 2nd District supervisor in the Nov. 2 election, told the council that what happened in Bell was an egregious example of violating the rights of taxpayers and voters.

“We have people who just want to believe the worst,” Rutherford said. “And we need to be as transparent as possible so that people can arm themselves with the facts and not succumb to believing the worst.”
