REDLANDS – The City Council has released a list detailing the total number of jobs it eliminated through recent budget cuts and the reorganizations of city departments necessary after the cuts were made.

The council unanimously approved a resolution making the reorganizations official by adding the cost for the remaining positions into the city budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

“As within the past three years, departments have continued the reorganization process to represent a more cost-effective, productive organizational structure,” said Deborah Scott-Leistra, director of the city’s Human Resources Department. “Through this process, approximately 50 positions have been eliminated citywide.”

The Police Department – the largest of all city departments – lost 21 positions. Fifteen of those were layoffs within the department’s civilian work force.

Only one sworn officer position was eliminated. The remaining job cuts were through the elimination of open positions.

The Community Development Department underwent the most radical reorganization and also received a name change. The department is now called Development Services.

The city’s building, planning, economic development, housing, redevelopment and administration functions will all be under the direction of Development Services Director Oscar Orci.
