Recount begins in state Senate race

A recount has begun in California’s 40th Senate District, where a mere 22 votes separate the two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination.

Officials in San Diego and Riverside counties on Monday began sorting through the nearly 41,000 ballots cast in the June 8 primary for state Assemblywoman Mary Salas or former Assemblyman Juan Vargas. The current tally has Vargas in the lead.

Salas requested the recount and is paying for it. The district also includes all of Imperial County, but Salas did not request a recount of ballots cast there. Salas lost handily to Vargas in Imperial County, while beating him in Riverside and San Diego counties.
