BARSTOW • Barstow Mayor Joe Gomez is being investigated by the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department, The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office confirmed.

D.A.’s spokesperson Susan Mickey said that the district attorney’s office is reviewing a case involving Gomez, but no decision about filing charges has been made yet. The district attorney’s office received the case from the sheriff’s department Monday, Mickey said. Mickey said she could not comment on what the allegations were.

According to City Manager Richard Rowe, the sheriff’s department is investigating Gomez for an incident that happened in the unincorporated Barstow area, but, he said, he is unaware of what the allegations are.

The city became aware that Gomez was being investigated because the sheriff’s department notified Barstow Police Chief Dianne Burns, Rowe said. He and the city attorney had discussed the investigation with Gomez prior to Tuesday’s City Council meeting. However because the matter involves a personnel issue, Rowe said he was unable to comment about the discussion.

“It’s troubling because it involves a public official,” Rowe said, adding that the City Council has been made aware of the investigation.
