County supervisors will meet in closed session today to discuss the appointment of a new county administrative officer.

More than 200 applications have poured in since the abrupt firing of Mark Uffer on Nov. 17, said Mark Kirk, chief of staff for Board Chairman Gary Ovitt.

“It’s the top priority for my boss and all the other supervisors as well,” Kirk said.

The Board of Supervisors is pushing for a public announcement of the new CAO by its first meeting of the year, on Jan. 15.

At least a dozen applicants are well-qualified for the job, Kirk said.

Still, the county has not actually interviewed anyone.

“The board has not been involved in any interviews,” Supervisor Neil Derry said. He declined to say why, saying it would violate closed-session meeting protocol.

The Board of Supervisors, on a split vote in closed session Nov. 17, voted to fire Uffer without cause. Uffer had held the position since September 2004.
